London has been one of the world’s major cities for over two millennia, London’s first major settlement was made by the Roman’s who called the city Londinium.
London was later controlled by the Vikings and then the Saxons who started the first modern linage of Kings with William the Conqueror who was crowned king in 1066.
The bubonic plague which devastated much of Europe in the 14th century hit London hard killing a third of its population, Plague was to hit London again in the 17th century killing one hundred thousand people in the great plague, the bubonic plague was spread via fleas on the back of rats, this was put to an end by the Great Fire of London in 1666 which completely destroyed most of London killing the majority of the infected rats.
Again London rebuilt and by 1831 London was the world’s biggest, richest and most powerful city being at the centre of the largest empire in earth’s history.
Rebuilding after destruction is something that London and its population have had to come to terms with many times through its history and this again happened in World War two when the German Luftwaffe devastated the city of London with a prolonged bombing campaign which became known as the Blitz, Londoners determination not to give in whilst the city was being destroyed around them was known as the spirit of the Blitz.
Today London again has been rebuilt whilst retaining iconic buildings and landmarks from many of its historical periods making it one of the most unique historical cities of the world.
